Tick

This is an interview between me and Tick on 5/6/00. Tick is also known as Rooter, Ender and Sewer. He's played a solo char, a small crew and as a jacker. He's always doing crazy things and saying funny, bizzare stuff.

You say 'How did you first get into mudding?'

Rooter says 'Oh, Tempest/Thorn, is my best friend in rl, we've lived on the same block for 17 years or so'
Rooter says 'and he went to virginia for college his sophomore year'
Rooter says 'well, I had gotten a unix account and one of the ways we kept in touch was to use chat'
Rooter says 'I mean the 'talk' command'
Rooter says 'that worked for awhile, and then he'd be in another window a lot'
Rooter says 'and I asked him what the heck he was doing'
Rooter says 'it turned out he was mudding, which I had no clue about at the time'
Rooter says 'so one day, after I was complaining that he kept going to other windows'
Rooter says 'he said "why don't you log in this mud"'
Rooter says 'it was Apocalpypse IV. After a week or 2 I stopped just using it for talking to him'
Rooter says 'and tried it'
Rooter says 'it was a lot of fun, but eventually after about 3 months or so of playing sporactically,'
Rooter says 'I got myself muted because I kept trying to sell useless items on auction'
Rooter says 'when i first started playing, someone gave me a bag of holding because they thought I was funn'
Rooter says 'y or something silly'
Rooter says 'and this mud had a bug where the contents were negative'
Rooter says 'so I could fit anything into the bag'
Rooter says 'so I spent most of my time finding the most useless items in the game and putting them in the '
Rooter says 'bag'
Rooter says 'after I got muted, I stopped playing for awhile and Tempest said he found this great mud, it w'
Rooter says 'was tdome'
Rooter says 'and I've been here ever since'

You say 'What are you most proud of on TDome?'

Rooter says 'Probably the 4 on 4 Technodome fight, one of the first ever'
Rooter says 'it was Tempest, mid level sammie, Uriah, 25th or so level Fanatic, Boo's 25th or so level Fana'
Rooter says 'tic and me, 25-30 level mutant'
Rooter says 'vs Brute, Void (I think someone else used him), Jiriki, and one of Aurora's chars (not sure)'
Rooter says 'maybe Corona'
Rooter says 'anyway, those guys were bad ass'
Rooter says 'we were this motly crew of relative newbies who would get 9mm pistols'
Rooter says 'by making LW guards fight and thought that was great'
Rooter says 'Tempest has the log somewhere, most of it'
Rooter says 'but the quick version:'
Rooter says 'I psiblast Brute immediately, he goes from 450 to -30, but alive'
Rooter says 'Void immediately disints me, I die'
Rooter says 'Boo and Uriah do some cool things with fanatic spells, I think Jiriki or Void ended up'
Rooter says 'burning to death on firewall'
Rooter says 'Tempest shot the one who didn't get burned with a 9mm pistol (guess where he got it)'
Rooter says 'and he used calliope and some other things'
Rooter says 'even though I died in the first few seconds, it was the best fight I've been in'
Rooter says 'I was proud to be one of those 4!'

You say 'What was your favorite class to play?'

Rooter says 'Ha! Mutant'
Rooter says 'When I played, very few people knew how good mutants could be'
Rooter says 'they learned quickly after the first Technodomes started'
Rooter says 'I thought I had no chance against a lot of the guys in there, and'
Rooter says 'I really never fought anything that hard before, so never really saw what psiblast '
Rooter says 'could do'
Rooter says 'and back then, groups didn't even ask for a psiblaster because'
Rooter says 'they didn't think it was that great'

You say 'What is your favorite zone and why?'

Rooter says 'hmm that's a tough one'
Rooter says 'It would come down between pirate island and the desert, but i think i'd pick the desert'
Rooter says 'i had the most fun spending a rl day in the desert and not coming back to town'
Rooter says 'leave my char sleeping in the desert and not really knowing any better'
Rooter says 'it took a long while before something killed me while I was afk'
Rooter says 'i would go to sleep in rl for the night and wake up and be ok'
Rooter says 'it was neat because groups would always go to the desert and walk into me and i'd join them'
Rooter says 'and there was enough random stuff to keep you busy and keep it interesting'

You say 'What do you like the most about TDome?'

Rooter says 'the atmosphere'
Rooter says 'hehe I guess that's like saying everything'
Rooter says 'though I haven't played on many muds, I never felt like an area was big or that you could get '
Rooter says 'lost in it for long on any other mud'
Rooter says 'walking around, not knowing quite where you are, being able to use skills that interact with'
Rooter says 'the room made it feel more like real wilderness'
Rooter says 'and more thrilling because so many things could happen to you'
Rooter says 'on other muds, there are usually very well marked trails to ever area, and the wilderness cons'
Rooter says 'consists of about 2-3 rooms on each side of that path'
Rooter says 'of course, the people also add to the atmosphere'

You say 'If you could change any aspect of TDome, what would it be?'

Rooter says 'bring back weather code'
Rooter says 'lots of people don't like it, but it added another dimension to the game'
Rooter says 'it made it a lot more exciting'
Rooter says 'i also had only played a mutant, and they were very well adapted for the weather code'
Rooter says 'so it wasn't as bad as for other classes, but itried playing'
Rooter says 'other classes with it, and if i had a good suit of fur gear,'
Rooter says 'cold wasn't a problem'
Rooter says 'i never really tested heat, but it wasn't that bad, i grouped with a lot of people'
Rooter says 'in the heat, and they did ok'
Rooter says 'people bitched about the cold more than the heat i think'

You say 'Who has influenced you the most here?'

Rooter says 'Phoque and Zxc probably, I learned a lot by grouping with them'
Rooter says 'Boo also though, how he went about trying to learn things'
Rooter says 'as much as did stupid things with my first mutling with Ender/Rooter,'
Rooter says 'I realized I learned a lot from watch Phoque and Zxc when I
grouped with them as a solo'

You say 'What is the most important thing you've learned from TDome?'

Rooter says 'learning to have fun and not take things that seriously'
Rooter says 'some of the best groups I've been in were ones that failed miserably'
Rooter says 'I'm sure a lot of people feel the same way'
Rooter says 'you can do things smart and carefully but still have fun and kid around with'
Rooter says 'people while you're grouped'

You say 'You're one of the greatest stock experts of TDome.'

Rooter throws back his head and cackles with insane glee!

You say 'In fact, many months of your TDome life were spent in the stock room beating up the mobs.'
You say 'Do you think the stock game is still worth playing?'

Rooter says 'Nah, not unless you have a ton of money'
Rooter says 'I notice everything slowly goes up'
Rooter says 'Also, it's not as worth playing as much as the rest of the stuff in the mud'
Rooter says 'because it's not as much fun'
Rooter says 'I only played the stock market when I didn't have time to play tdome Xteen hours a day'
Rooter says 'though I did get carried away with spreadsheets and graphs'
Rooter says 'I remember bringing them on a rl train with me and trying to figure out how things worked'
Rooter says 'i think the person sitting next to me thought it was about real stocks'
Rooter says 'he was looking at the graphs a lot, I wonder if he went home that night'
Rooter says 'and tried looking up any of them'
Rooter says 'i don't know much about the real stock market'
Rooter says 'i deal with it a lot at work, but I don't really invest on my own, just a little'

You say 'Do you think you will ever play TDome again?'

Rooter says 'Hmm'
Rooter says 'Probably, but not like I used to'
Rooter says 'I'd probably play with just really crappy gear and ocassionaly shoot something'
Rooter says 'If you didn't age while in cryo or they made some other changes I might'
Rooter says 'some of those things are really annoying when you can only play 5-7 hours a week,'
Rooter says 'but they are also there to keep people challenged and stuff'

You say 'IRL you live in a hollowed out tree. What caused you to choose that as a home?'

Rooter says 'oh, I forgot to mention, I learned a lot about fighting in groups from Djinn, Feldor and Jesty'
Rooter says 'Jestry'
Rooter says 'uh Jestyr'

Rooter says 'there is a very little known tax loop hole in United States Tax Law'
Rooter says 'I could type it all out for you now, but to put it short,'
Rooter says 'there are major tax incentives to living in a hollowed out tree, or any other'
Rooter says 'naturally occuring habitat, actually'

You say 'At one time you used to enjoy throwing video tapes on your hibatchi (sp).'
You say 'What caused you to do such a thing?'

Rooter says 'Haha'
Rooter says 'Well, that I learned from a Kurt Vonnegut book'
Rooter says 'it's the book 'Hocus Pocus''
Rooter says 'in it, the main character ends up working in a state penitentiary'
Rooter says 'the jail used to be a school, which the main character also taught in'
Rooter says 'a college, for dsylexic kids'
Rooter says 'the main character also ends up incarcerated at that same prison later on'
Rooter says 'he also goes on to escape from the jail during a riot, which he partially is'
Rooter says 'responsible for'
Rooter says 'oh anyway, while he works there, as a teacher for the inmates, the prison is run'
Rooter says 'by the japanese'
Rooter says 'they get all these ill humored japanese guards from japan to uhm, stand guard'
Rooter says 'the japanese guards ocassionaly change the tapes which serve as the prion's'
Rooter says 'prison's tv broadcasts'
Rooter says 'and it's stuff they don't understand or even want to know about'
Rooter says 'and the main character imagines that to one of these japanese guards,'
Rooter says 'when he puts another VCR tape in the VCR,'
Rooter says 'it's like throwing a tape into the hibatchi'
Rooter says 'it's a really funny book, you should read it, one of my favorites'

You say 'Which word describes you best, "slacker" or "smacker"?'

Rooter says 'hmm!!'
Rooter says 'are you suggesting something?'
Rooter says 'i'm a slacker'
Rooter says 'I'm also a smacker though'
Rooter says 'I'm not sure what a smacker is, but I think a good example of being one is'
Rooter says 'when Phoque and Zxc decided to let me group with them'
Rooter says '(who knows why they did)'
Rooter says 'and we go to Jurassic Park'
Rooter says 'and while we're all standing around while Zxc scouts,'
Rooter says 'in walks a brontosaurus, which I never seen'
Rooter says 'so I says "Can we keep him??!?!"'
Rooter says 'and I proceed to 'mindlink brontosaurus follow tick''
Rooter says 'let's just say it didn't work'
Rooter says 'another time, we're going to kill the Pope'
Rooter says 'Djinn, Phoque, and maybe Zxc and some others were there'
Rooter says 'I didn't really know Djinn's fight habits,'
Rooter says 'so his shooter points at Pope, and I thought he was shooting,'
Rooter says 'so I attack and get killed right away'
Rooter says 'Now I know that Djinn sometimes points at the target before we attack'

You say 'You've been promoting the www.superbad.com site.'
You say 'What IS it and how did you find out about it?'

Rooter falls down laughing.
Rooter says 'some teeny bopper from the TMBG chat site had a TMBG page,'
Rooter says 'it was www.superpatti.com (her name is patti)'
Rooter says 'and one of her links was to www.superbad.com'
Rooter says 'i've emailed the guy who runs superbad, and he says'
Rooter says 'no, they will not be making t-shirts'
Rooter says 'for those who haven't visit, it's hard to explain'
Rooter says 'visited that is'
Rooter says 'it's basically nonsense'
Rooter says 'but it took real talent to make this kind of nonsense'
Rooter says 'you can spend hours at it laughing'
Rooter says 'he rotates and adds new home pages every day, so check often'

You say 'Tell me about your band.'

Rooter says 'well, we haven't been able to define ourselves yet'
Rooter says 'it's one of our problems'
Rooter says 'right now, we're taking a break since the lead singer and the lead guitarist'
Rooter says 'aren't getting along'
Rooter says 'one is an unorganized pothead (almost always high)'
Rooter says 'the other is a cornell business school graduate who tries to'
Rooter says 'organize everything like a company'
Rooter says 'and uses marketing jargon'
Rooter says 'you can imagine how that works out'

You say 'What are some of the other things you do IRL?'

Rooter says 'I like to draw and listen to music'
Rooter says 'sometimes I write'
Rooter says 'i also like to read a bunch'
Rooter says 'usually sci-fi, philosophy or mathematical theory'
Rooter says 'sometimes just general books though'
Rooter says 'a losay a lot of the things I'm into, I don't do uniformly'
Rooter says 'like i'll draw a bunch of stuff for a few weeks and then won't draw for a few months'
Rooter says 'also keep in mind, i didn't say I was good at drawing or writing, but it's fun'
Rooter says 'i like to rollerblade too'
Rooter says 'i just know how to go foward though'
Rooter says 'i can't do any tricks, intentionally at least'
Rooter says 'i'm also working on a web broswer based game'
Rooter says 'but i haven't worked on it for a few months'
Rooter says 'that's about it!'

You say 'Is it like Ragnar's game?'

Rooter says 'hahaha'
Rooter says 'it's not quite as cool :)'
Rooter says 'it will be at : www.simspace.net'
Rooter says 'but there's nothing there yet, check periodically for progress!'
Rooter says 'there will be a functional game up there in the next 3 weeks'
Rooter says 'but stuff might be broken and i'll be testing'
Rooter says 'so no so function I guess'
Rooter says 'but it will give folks an idea'

You say 'This will be the last question.'
You say 'Where do you see yourself in the future?'

Rooter says 'after this conversation, I will most likely walk south on to Central Avenue'

You say 'heh'

Rooter says 'well hmm'
Rooter says 'in the future, I see myself playing in slightly larger places with my band'
Rooter says 'oh, i also do some research work in cognitive psychology, so I hope to contribute something us'
Rooter says 'useful there'
Rooter says 'i've done some stuff that actually got published, but i don't think it was very useful'
Rooter says 'that's it!'

Rooter thanks you heartily.

You say 'Thanks, Rooter :)'

Rooter gets a round plastic shield.
