This is a file I made to help new players out. It was an attempt to summarize the various experiences I observed and things that annoy me.




Auctions


Do not comment negatively on another player's auction. This is rude and can get people angry at you. If you must comment negatively, make sure that what you say is reasonable. For example, if the item is 1k or 2k overpriced, it would be unreasonable to complain about that.



Bugs


Always report bugs to the gods. If you get caught, the penalties are extreme. On the other hand, the rewards for abusing bugs are minimal. Consider this. Suppose you discover a way to dupe. You can only dupe a small amount of items, since if you did it on a large scale, you most certainly would be detected. However, no matter how much you dupe, the penalties will be nearly the same (very harsh). And if this wasn't reason enough, abusing bugs makes the game less enjoyable for all players. Additionally, it improves your reputation amoung the gods. Because most gods are naturally paranoid, a good reputation is difficult to achieve with them.

When you report bugs, always report them privately. Never gossip "I need to report a bug to a god!" This will cause many people to ask what the bug is. They will harass you until they get tired or until you tell them.



Communication


When you are relaying sensetive information with another player, always make sure to use the telepath command and NOT the reply command. Otherwise you could give the sensetive information to someone by accident if they tell to you right before you reply.

Never spam on any channel, for ANY reason. This will ALWAYS cause people to become angry. For example, if you spam, "SHIT!" ten times after you die, people will not be sympathetic. Rather, your chances of dying twice are improved.



Gifts


When presented with a gift, accept it only if you can use it. Otherwise, you might hurt the person's feelings if they find out you never used it. Do not accept a gift and then sell it, for the same reason. If you do sell a gift, you should wait an extensive amount of time first.

Do not ask a slinger friend for a free enchant and then sell the item. This is a way of stealing that person's business if they sell enchants.



Grouping


When asked if you want to join a group, always accept the offer, even if it is an inconvenience to you. Otherwise you will get a reputation as someone who does not like to group, and you may not be asked again. Also, this is the best way to make friends.



Ideas / Suggestions


Never offer an idea or suggestion to a god if it is related to a skill or command which is already working well. This is dangerous because if someone examines that piece of code, they may decide to tweak with other parts of it. If a skill or command is already working well, chances are it will not be made better. There is a decent chance that it will be made worse however. For example, in the disembowel miss message it states, "You try to rip out the guts of (mob name).. but slash yourself!" Someone saw this message and decided that it should have a chance of damaging the user.



Loot


When you are in a group, and there is loot, only take it if no one else wants it. Make sure to ask the group if anyone wants the item. Once you know that no one else wants the item, then you can keep it. Otherwise, you could get the reputation of a greedy person. Additionally, you could get other people angry at you. It is ALWAYS better to give up a piece of equipment than to have someone become angry at you. Relationships are much harder to get than a piece of equipment.

Never form a group to kill a mob for a piece of equipment and then sell that piece of equipment. This is rude and insulting to the people that helped you. If you do this, make sure to split the money from the sale with each member who helped you. This is the decent thing to do considering those players could have been earning money during the time they helped you.



Mail


When writing mail to someone, always use the MAIL command and not the WRITE command. Using the write command causes you to write on the public board. This allows everyone to see your message. Additionally, the recipient is never informed of the message.



Messages


Always remove your messages when they become outdated. Most people do not use the REMOVE command, even though it is available to them. If you do not remove your messages, the gods must remove them. Also, board space is limited. If a post does not belong on the board, it should be removed by the owner.



Loans


Never loan equipment or money if you can't afford to lose it. When you make the loan, consider it a gift to that person. While most people intend to repay or return what they borrowed, too often they fail to do so.



Items


There are certain items you should never sell. These are items that are hard for you to get. Examples might include, boots of sneaking. You won't get much money for them compared to how hard they are to get. Suppose you sell a pair for 50k. You can make 50k in a day maybe, but it will take you many days to get a new pair of boots.
